What is the Hague Convention?

Also called the Apostille Convention or the Apostille Treaty, the ‘Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents’ is an international treaty that specifies how documents issued within one country can be certified for legal purposes in another. It was created by the Hague Conference on Private International Law in the Netherlands and came into effect on 14th January 1965. The Hague Convention has 112 signatories and sets out the documents that are eligible for legalisation and the practices for legitimately legalising documents for use in other member territories. It sets out the requirements of legalisation and therefore is very important to Notary Public services and what Notaries do. You can see all the signatories to the Hague Convention in the map below:
  • Dark Red - signatory and member of the Hague Conference on Private and International Law.
  • Green - signatory and non-member of the Hague Conference on Private and International Law.
  • Light Red - not in force.
  • Yellow - non signatories.
